Great deal for the price!4
I bought this set as a Christmas present, but had to check it out before I wrapped it. I have a Henckels block and some Henckels knives as well, both the cheaper Chinese "International" and some more expensive German ones as well. The "International" Henckels knifes I have are wooden-handled, poorly balanced, flimsy and somewhat poorly made. I wanted to be sure that these knives didn't suffer from the same deficits before gifting.

I was quite pleased to see that this set of knives greatly exceeds the quality of the cheaper Henckels knives I own, and approach the quality of some of my most expensive knives. They are well balanced, sturdy, well-made and beautiful. The grip seems like it would be of no concern to me (some other reviewers have pointed out that the stainless grip offers little purchase) but I didn't use them for any cutting work.

Overall, I am jealous, and tempted to buy another set for myself. Just not sure the wife would permit two blocks on the kitchen counter. This set is a steal at twice the price.

Excellent Knife Set4
This knife set is well constructed and has a nice weight to it. The only downfall is that it is missing slots for the set of steak knives that are sold separately.

Mediocre3
These knives are OK. For their price, they're actually decent. But these are, after all cheap, stamped knives. Expect to toss them after a year, and expect to sharpen them often, but not in a sharpener for nice knives.

The block is surprisingly good-looking. The set as a whole goes very well in my super modern kitchen. I plan to keep using the block with nicer knives.

J.A. Henckels Twin Cuisine Cutlery

10/11/08

While many premium knives feature full tang construction, Twin Cuisine was the first high-quality forged cutlery line to feature a molded handle with a visible, full-length tang that runs horizontally. In fact, the handle is absolutely stunning, with the shiny tang curving slightly as it courses through the black non-slip polypropylene. With no rivets or gaps, the ergonomic handle provides seamless comfort, while the full tang adds weight for optimum strength and balance. The single-piece blade, forged from high-carbon, no-stain steel and strengthened in the Henckels exclusive Friodur ice-hardening process, retains its sharp edge through extensive cutting and chopping. Between looks and function, it's no wonder Twin Cuisine won the prestigious Good Design Award out of Chicago in 2004, the year of its introduction, and the coveted Red Dot Design Award in 2005. Made in Germany, Twin Cuisine knives should be washed and dried by hand immediately after use and are covered by a lifetime warranty.

The Story of J.A. Henckels

10/10/08

For over 275 years, J.A. Henckels has been known worldwide for making the finest cutlery available in the marketplace. It was in Solingen, Germany in 1731, where knife maker Johann Peter Henckels registered the "twin" symbol, now synonymous with heirloom-quality knives, making it one of the oldest trademarks in the world. Henckels pioneered the introduction of quality-control procedures in the cutlery industry and still adheres to exacting standards--combined with leading-edge technology and development--to create its superior products. Always an industry innovator, Henckels developed no-rust, acid-resistant stainless-steel blades by using a mix of carbon and stainless steel. His company was the first to produce dishwasher-safe knives with molded polypropylene handles that are both ergonomic and hygienic. J.A. Henckels' exclusive Friodur® process, used in manufacturing of TWIN® knives, ensures longer lasting cutting edge and excellent no-stain properties. Today, J.A. Henckels has expanded its assortment from premium cutlery (J.A. Henckels TWIN) into a wide variety of kitchen products including: value cutlery (J.A. Henckels International), kitchen gadgets and tools, cookware, flatware, scissors/shears. The quality standards developed over 275 years ago, are still reflected in every piece that carries the company's name.

J.A. Henckels Twin Five Star Cutlery

10/6/08

The premium Twin Five Star series from J.A. Henckels employs the blades of the Four Star series, but for a more contemporary look substitutes a beautifully curved handle molded out of black polypropylene. With no rivets or edges to cause discomfort, the ergonomic handles take the strain out of long stretches of food preparation and nestle securely into a wide range of hand sizes. An enhanced bolster on the Five Star adds superb chopping weight as well as finger protection from the sharp blade. Henckels' Sigmaforge process forges each Five Star knife blade, bolster, and full rat-tail tang out of a single piece of high-carbon, no-stain steel for precision balance and strength. The blades undergo Henckels' exclusive Friodur ice-hardening process to increase corrosion resistance and cutting-edge retention, and as a final step are hand-honed until they're ready to slice effortlessly through just about anything. Made in Germany and covered with a lifetime warranty, Five Star knives are dishwasher-safe; though washing by hand is highly recommended for all fine cutlery.

J.A. Henckels Twin Select Cutlery

There's just something downright sensuous about the all-metal Twin Select knives. Curvaceous and perfectly weighted, the knife handle features the same ergonomic design as the Five Star series, but in satin-finish 18/10 stainless steel. The Gemini-twins logo of Zwilling J.A. Henckels is embossed in the end to signify premium quality. The blade is that of the famous Four Star series, constructed from a single piece of high-carbon, no-stain steel in Henckels' new Sigmaforge process, then Friodur ice-hardened for increased corrosion resistance and cutting-edge retention. As a final step, the laser-controlled edge is hand-honed until it's scarily sharp. Select knives practically melt through meats, fish, and fruit, and meet all government regulations for food preparation hygiene (they are so durable they can be sterilized under extreme heat and pressure in an autoclave). Launched in 2001 and made in Germany, the Twin Select series won the prestigious iF Design Award that same year and the Red Dot Design Award the following year. Select knives are covered by a lifetime warranty and, while dishwasher-safe, are best cared for when washed by hand.

J.A. Henckels Twin Pro S Cutlery

Twin Pro S premium knives are classically constructed for both the professional and aspiring chef. The black polypropylene handles feature the strength of a full visible tang and triple rivets, while the enhanced bolster adds to the beautiful balance. In fact, the Twin Pro S was the first traditional knife to feature a "super" bolster. Henckels forges the blades, bolster, and tang out of a single piece of high-carbon, no-stain steel using its new Sigmaforge process. Then the blades are Friodur ice-hardened for strength and the edges laser-controlled and precision honed, which basically means the knives come out of the box super-sharp and able to retain their sharpness longer. A popular model since its launch in 1990, the German-made Pro S (sometimes called Professional 'S') has earned high rankings from independent Consumer Reports and is covered by a lifetime warranty against defects. While dishwasher-safe, the cutlery is best cared for when washed and dried by hand.

J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star II Cutlery

The popular Four Star series gets an update with Four Star II. Immediately noticeable is the elegant stainless-steel end cap added to the handle heel, embossed with the Zwilling J.A. Henckels logo as recognition of premium cutlery. Otherwise, the molded polypropylene handles are as durable, comfortable, and hygienic as ever, with a super bolster that protects the fingers. The weight and balance have improved, as Henckels' new Sigmaforge process now constructs each knife blade, bolster, and full rat-tail tang out of a single piece of high-carbon, no-stain steel. The blades undergo Henckels' exclusive Friodur ice-hardening process to increase corrosion resistance and cutting-edge retention, and as a final step are hand-honed so they're ready to slice with ease through just about anything. These are superb knives with a high-end, contemporary aesthetic. Made in Germany and covered with a lifetime warranty, Four Star II knives are dishwasher-safe, although washing and drying this fine cutlery is recommended.

J.A. Henckels Twin Cermax Cutlery

10/5/08

Combining Japanese aesthetics and German ingenuity, Twin Cermax M66 knives transform kitchen tools into outstanding works of art. The fluidly curved handles capped with stainless steel are irresistible to pick up. Feel the way the curves fit the hand, the perfect heft, the balance provided by the full tang. Triple-riveted, the sensuous black grip looks like the polished wood of traditional Japanese knives, but is actually a layered linen-resin compound, impervious and durable. Now try cutting with these knives. Acutely edged in the Japanese style, the blade is comprised of tough microcarbide steel, powdered then compacted under high pressure to become extremely hard. No flimsy edges on these beauties. Furthermore, these blades come hand-honed, resulting in a spectacularly razor-sharp knife. A collaboration between J.A. Henckels and television's original Japanese Iron Chef, Rokusaburo Michiba, Twin Cermax M66 cutlery was launched in 2005 and in 2006 won both the coveted Red Dot Design Award and the iF Design Award. Manufactured in Japan, this is the par excellence series of all J.A. Henckels Twin premium knives. The cutlery is covered by a lifetime warranty and should be washed only by hand.
